Seven years after the release, Microsoft has officially terminated the production of the Kinect sensor. The hardware was introduced during the life-cycle of the Xbox 360 and become increasingly important. Nevertheless, Microsoft will continue to offer customer support for the over 35 million units sold with Kinect.
It has already been suggested in the past months and it is now official. The manufacturer, Microsoft, has stopped the production of the Kinect sensor. Seven years after its official launch in 2010 there will be no more new games or functions for its owners. The sale of the hardware has already been discontinued in the Microsoft Store. Microsoft has sold over 35 million copies of the sensor under the original code-name of Project Natal.
According to the report, the publisher would like to continue offering support for Kinect owners. However, the developers will no longer have access to the camera’s tools. The Kinect will no longer be offered with the upcoming launch of the Xbox One X. Microsoft will focus more on “mixed reality” devices like the HoloLens AR glasses. Among other things, the Kinect sensor technology will be incorporated in these future devices.
